The Humans Must Be Crazy II

Hola, ¿qué tal?”  “Hi, how’s it going?”, I heard as I looked up from my resting spot by the lake. That´s when I met Darcie. Earlier that morning I said goodbye to my mother as I left my hometown of Mérida to set out on my uncertain Camino adventure. Uncertain, I say because I was crossing half of Spain with nothing more than my backpack, walking stick, boots, and hat; walking…, every day. Uncertain, because I didn´t know where it would take me. I knew the general direction, so come what may; I would hopefully end up where I needed to be.

The sensation of taking those first steps with my new house strapped to my back was pretty special. Bit by bit I was beginning to savor the feeling of a “provisional release” as my body grew accustomed to the rhythms of the trail. As I walked, I though, “I´m where I should be, and I will enjoy this experience. I have all the time I need, and el Camino is long”. I felt sure that along the way, at any time or place, Life, or rather the el Camino, would grant me unforgettable gifts.

Hola”, I replied to the wanderer that had just appeared in front of me. Arriving at Proserpina, I had caught up to a lady pilgrim who was walking alone. If the truth be told, I had avoided her on purpose. My idea of walking el Camino was associated with a certain feeling of being alone and I wanted to be true to that feeling, at least for now. So, after gaining an appropriate amount of distance from her, I decided to take a break by the lake. My bliss was short lived.

It´s about to happen! Check it out! They´re finally going to meet! Shouted Our Lady of Fátima from her state of stasis.

“Ahhhh!!” uttered the Virgin of Guadalupe as she felt a sudden pull on her white tunic from her saintly companion.

At first, her greeting me seemed a bit strange because she had to go a bit out of her way. Nevertheless, we introduced each other and exchanged the usual information. She mentioned something about not having “many” ancient Roman ruins in her hometown of Bishop, California, but there were gorgeous lakes like this one for fishing. We politely took leave of each other, “Buen Camino”.

Buen Camino”, I replied. As I continued my break, I thought that wasn´t so bad, she even had a nice smile.

I let her continue on until no one was to be seen and I felt once again my little cloud of bliss surrounding me as I enjoyed the beautiful view and savored the thoughts of what el Camino would offer me.

Confucius, who was in his own state of bliss, breathed deeply and whispered into the ear of the Proserpina Goddess, “I told you it would be now or never, and it would be here or not al all!” The Goddess Proserpina, with her knowing smile, glanced over at the Spirit of the White Mountains, her soul sister, with a wink saying, “We can let out the Big Dogs: tell Julián to prepare himself, it will be in Aljucén…”

Chapeco, Brasil

  • Monumento o Desbravador (Realmente grande!).
